While in Senegal and Mali, learning the art of sabar drumming and West African rhythms and coming under the wing of Youssou N'Dour, Aylon quickly took to the traditional lutes of the n'goni family. Here, he plays the n'goni bass, the smaller kamele n'goni, the jeli n'goni favored by griots, and the Senegalese xalam. He also performs on synthesizer and electric bass plus some percussion and other electronics. Over the years, he studied with sabar drummer Aly Ndiaye Rose and worked with the father, Doludou, and members of his family. Other guest stars on these recordings are Malian vocalists Amy Sacko and the late Khaira Arby and Ethiopian-Israeli vocalist Aveva. The music is steeped in West African tradition, but aside from some lyrics, Aylon wrote his own tunes. The result is multi-layered contemporary fusion in West African style and sound with rock and Western pop influences. The album Xalam is an unusual, interesting approach that further shrinks the world into a global community. Aylon's trademark name for himself is One-man Tribe, which speaks to his independent international outlook. *651 $aAfrika$_10186600 *651 $aMali$_15205100 *651 $aSenegal$_13825600 *651 $aVest-Afrika$_10438000 *655 $aFolkemusikk$_35575400 ^
